Driver speeds away from traffic stop when K-9 unit arrives to take a sniff

A Leesburg man has been arrested on a warrant after fleeing from a traffic stop earlier this year.

On Jan. 16, a Leesburg officer spotted 38-year-old Kareem Javon Goldwire driving a red Ford sedan northbound on Georgia Avenue, according to an affidavit of probable cause out of Lake County. The vehicle’s dark front window tint led to a traffic stop at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Stinson Street.

Using a tint meter, the officer determined the front passenger window was darker than the legal limit. He then went back to his patrol vehicle to verify Goldwire’s information while a K-9 unit arrived on scene. They spoke to Goldwire about a K-9 being used for a free air sniff test, prompting Goldwire to speed away from the scene.

He was last seen heading westbound on Industrial Street at high speeds with no regard for public safety. He accelerated rapidly through Thomas Avenue as officers lost sight of him, the report said…
