Construction of James Beard Public Market expected to garner $20M in economic impact

PORTLAND, Ore (KOIN) — James Beard Public Market’s construction is expected to support around 90 jobs and bring in nearly $20 million to the Portland area, according to a recent assessment.

Project leaders revealed the findings of an independent economic impact study for the incoming food hall on Friday. A spokesperson for the project noted that 48 of the roles supported through the build-out process are for construction workers, while the remaining positions are for “indirect and induced jobs created through supply chain spending and worker expenditures” contributing to the local economy.

“We need to act with urgency to create jobs and economic opportunity,” Jessica Elkan, the market’s executive director, said in a statement. “Before the market is even operational, this economic development will create close to 100 jobs because of public-private investment in our downtown core.”…
