2 huge white sharks lurk off NC coast near Emerald Isle and Hatteras Island

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Two huge white sharks are being tracked along the North Carolina coast on Sunday, according to an ocean research group that specializes in tracking the large sea creatures.

OCEARCH first announced on Saturday that a female white shark named Cayo pinged close to the beach near Emerald Isle in Carteret County. Cayo, a 10-foot, 689-pound juvenile shark, was tagged on July 29, 2025, by the Tancook Islands Marine Field Station in Nova Scotia.

Cayo has been tracked all year as far south as Myrtle Beach, all the way up to the Outer Banks area. According to OCEARCH’s tracker, she was spotted just on the shore of Swansboro on Friday.

It was then reported on OCEARCH’s website that another juvenile white shark, Nori, pinged near Hatteras Island. Nori is just under 9 feet and weighs 423 pounds, and was also tagged by the Tancook Islands Marine Field Station in Nova Scotia, back in October 4, 2025…
