A Florida sheriff’s fundraiser meant to support charity is making headlines for an unusual reason after an inmate allegedly slipped away from his work assignment for a rendezvous inside a porta-potty.

The incident happened during the 32nd annual Indian River County Sheriff’s Office BBQ fundraiser in Vero Beach, Florida. The popular event raised $63,000 for charity and featured jail tours, SWAT and K-9 demonstrations, and plenty of food for guests.

Visitors could grab $2 hot dogs or $7 dinner plates with pork or chicken while enjoying the family-friendly event.

To help run the fundraiser, the sheriff’s office used inmates known as “trustees.” These inmates are considered reliable enough to assist with work assignments outside the jail’s regular housing areas.

Surveillance Cameras Capture the Moment

One of those trustees was Hartley Sanchez, 35, of Vero Beach, who is currently jailed while awaiting trial on theft and drug possession charges.

According to a police report, Sanchez was working the BBQ serving line when he “snuck away” around 5:30 p.m. Surveillance cameras showed him walking toward a row of portable toilets where he spoke with two women…
