Gainesville, GA – In a heartbreaking twist to a tragic prank, the widow of a beloved high school teacher is calling for all charges to be dropped against the students involved in her husband’s death.

Jason Hughes, 40, a popular teacher in Gainesville, Georgia, died on the evening of March 6 after a long-standing student tradition of “toilet papering” his front yard went horribly wrong. Five students, including Jayden Wallace, were participating in the prank when the incident occurred.

Wallace currently faces vehicular homicide charges, while the four other students have been charged with criminal trespass and littering.

Laura Hughes, Jason’s wife and a fellow math teacher at the same high school, expressed her family’s unwavering support for the students, stating, “Our family supports getting the charges dropped for all involved.” She told The New York Times that her husband was “excited” about the prank and had gone outside around 11:40 p.m. to “catch them in the act” as the students were fleeing.

According to Laura, Jason, a father of two, was not angry but rather looking forward to engaging with his students in a lighthearted way. However, in a tragic turn of events, he reportedly tripped and fell onto the rain-slicked road and was subsequently struck by Wallace’s pickup truck as the student attempted to drive away. Wallace could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,” Laura Hughes emphasized. “This would be counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.”

Following the accident, the students immediately stopped and began administering first aid until emergency responders arrived. Jason Hughes was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

School officials had reportedly issued warnings to students just hours before the incident, urging them to discontinue the prank due to past instances where it had “taken things too far.”

The school district released a statement to The Times, saying, “Our hearts are broken. Jason Hughes was a loving husband, a devoted father, a passionate teacher, mentor, and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues.

He gave so much to so many in numerous ways. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and family.”

Jayden Wallace, facing the most severe charges, recently posted a Bible verse, Romans 10:9, on Instagram: “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
