No criminal charges from police-involved shootout in St. Paul shopping area

Prosecutors say criminal charges will not be filed in connection with a police-involved shootout in a St. Paul shopping area last summer.

According to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office, St. Paul police officers were justified in firing gunshots at Tevin Bellaphant during a chaotic incident on July 11. None of the officers’ shots hit Bellaphant or anyone else, but the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension routinely investigates all uses of deadly force by law enforcement.

The BCA says Bellaphant reportedly assaulted a relative and took a child from a St. Paul home around midday on July 11. A short time later, officers spotted him at Aldi on Clarence Street and tried to talk to him. However, investigators say the man shoved an officer and ran off, firing gunshots toward the officers on his way out…
