‘It’s all different without her’: Albany teens grapple with mom’s immigration detainment

Update – March 6, 2026: Attorneys for Medina submitted a second habeas corpus petition to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington Friday, demanding Medina be immediately released or given a second bond hearing.

In a declaration submitted with the petition, Medina’s son Cristian wrote his sister Valeria has taken their mom’s detention the hardest. “I find myself checking on my sister constantly, reminding her to eat, knocking on her door to make sure she’s okay, and trying to motivate her to keep working hard. I don’t want to let my mom down,” Cristian wrote.
