VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A New Mexico teenager is facing multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, speeding and eluding police following a violent three-vehicle collision that left a mother with severe injuries.
The crash occurred about 12:30 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Holland Road. Investigators say Leon Pena, 18, who was driving a Ram pickup truck, sped past a Virginia State Trooper on I-264 after eluding Virginia Beach Police. Monday afternoon, State Police said the trooper did not initiate a pursuit, but kept the truck in sight.
VSP reports that at the intersection of Independence Boulevard and South Plaza Trail, the trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the Ram sped away at speeds in excess of 100 miles-per-hour, and at that point, a pursuit was initiated…
