Mount Shasta rescue: Bay Area climbers saved after 700-foot fall

MOUNT SHASTA, Calif. — Two climbers from the Bay Area were rescued after being stranded in Avalanche Gulch on Mount Shasta on Sunday. The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office reported that the climbers, aged 19 and 20, faced trouble during their descent after summiting the mountain.

Officials at the scene say that one climber lost his footing below Red Banks, sliding approximately 700 feet and suffered injuries to his shoulder, hand and ankle. The challenging conditions delayed initial rescue efforts until the following morning.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff Search and Rescue team, along with US Forest Service climbing rangers, successfully rescued the climbers. The injured climber was transported to Mercy Medical Center for treatment…
