Upstate church hit by lightning, catches fire

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – A local church is looking to continue services despite damage caused to its chapel after it was struck by lightning and caught on fire.

According to a social media post from St. John of the Ladder Orthodox Church in Greenville, on Saturday the church building on Roper Mountain Road was struck by lightning, which sparked a fire that heavily damaged the chapel roof.

Photos shared by the church show where parts of the chapel was burned in the fire, and portions of the ceiling have fallen in.

The strike happened at a time when the church said it was already “bursting at the seams” from growth in its membership. St John of the Ladder said it was regularly drawing more than 500 people and had expanded services into Spartanburg County…
