NYPD: Two in custody after improvised explosive device thrown at protest

NEW YORK CITY (WPIX) — The device thrown near the New York City mayor’s residence at a protest on Saturday was an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death, the NYPD confirmed on Sunday.

Further analysis will be conducted, including on a second device, the NYPD Bomb Squad said.

Police said the chaos broke out around 11 a.m. near East End Avenue and East 87th Street, where two opposing groups had gathered. About 20 demonstrators were participating in a “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City” protest, led by the far-right activist Jake Lang, while a larger group of roughly 120 people rallied under the banner “Run the Nazis Out of New York.”…
