Woman banned from visiting friend in state prison after body scanner misidentified medical device as contraband

WEBSTER, N.Y. — More women have been banned from prison visits after body scanners mistakenly identified medical devices as contraband.

Mary Kay Hargather demonstrated at her home in Webster how she was asked to turn sideways and lift her arms inside a prison body scanner. The scan showed a mass in her chest. A sergeant then accused her of smuggling drugs.

“And that’s when he asked me what I had swallowed that morning,” said Hargather. “It’s just embarrassing to be accused of something that you didn’t do.”…
