Most school voucher applicants already go to private schools, report says

LUBBOCK, Texas —  More than 160,000 families have applied for Texas’ new “Education Freedom Accounts” program so far, according to the Comptroller.

The accounts, which were signed into law last May, aim to help families pay private school tuition starting in the 2026-27 school year.

But according to data obtained by the Texas Center for Voucher Transparency, more than 76% of those applications represent students already enrolled in a private school this year. The data measures applications from Feb. 4 to March 4.

Number of applications representing students who attended public versus private school for the 2025-26 school year.
