PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. — The Pickens County Planning Commission has denied a key part of the proposed development plan for the Greenville-Pickens Speedway multi-use park project.
Commissioners voted to deny the requests following a discussion at their meeting on Monday. The commission chair said the decision came down to two main issues: a traffic study and questions about whether the project fits with the county’s comprehensive plan.
Traffic study, land use questions cited
The commission chair said the traffic study submitted by developers was not completed in full compliance with county requirements. Commissioners also raised questions about whether the proposed industrial and commercial development matches the county’s long-term plan for the area.
The denial drew applause and cheering from residents in attendance.

“We have been working on this since 2023 and it’s just now within the past couple of months gotten really big and gotten the attention,” said Connie Johnson, a Pickens County resident. “I’m really happy that the planning commission is seeing the issues, the red flags that we’ve been raising, and really giving it a chance to be saved.”…
