Apopka Man Accused Of Killing Dog Lotus, Burying Her In Yard

A disturbing animal cruelty case out of Apopka centers on a man accused of killing and burying his dog, Lotus. The alleged killing happened Jan. 21, but the case only began to move forward this week after an anonymous tip sent officers to the property.

Investigation details

Orange County Animal Services and Apopka police went to a home on West Second Street on Jan. 27 after a Crimeline tip claimed someone had killed and buried a dog there. Investigators reported finding dried blood near a tree and soil that looked recently disturbed. According to the arrest report, the man told officers he had tried and failed to surrender Lotus to several rescues and shelters, and said the dog had recently knocked down his grandmother, causing a broken hip.

The affidavit alleges the man then tied Lotus to a tree, shot the dog twice in the back of the head with a pellet gun, cut her throat with a machete, placed the body in a bag, and buried it on the property, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando.

Context: Rehoming and the statewide registry

The arrest report’s note that Lotus’s owner tried to rehome her highlights an ongoing tension when rescues and shelters are short on space, and options feel limited. Florida launched a public animal-abuser registry under “Dexter’s Law” on Jan. 1, 2026, and local organizations told Spectrum News 13 they expect the searchable FDLE list to help shelters screen adopters and keep animals from going to people with prior abuse records…
