COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Each spring, lakes and ponds across Ohio get a sudden boost of life as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) begins releasing thousands of rainbow trout into public waters. The annual trout stocking program, run by the agency’s ODNR Division of Wildlife, sends hatchery-raised fish to dozens of locations around the state, giving anglers a fresh opportunity to cast a line and catch trout close to home.
Rainbow trout are raised at state fish hatcheries and measure 10-13 inches before they are released by the ODNR Division of Wildlife. The trout program is designed with new anglers and families in mind. Stocked locations are spread across the state so that most Ohio residents have a fishing spot within driving distance. Anglers can harvest up to five trout per day.
