1820 — First recorded duel in Arkansas Territory. Territorial legislator William O. Allen was mortally wounded on March 10, 1820 in a duel with Robert C. Oden on an island in the Mississippi River, in what the Encyclopedia of Arkansas describes as the first recorded duel fought in Arkansas. Allen shot first and struck a bullet on Oden’s coat. Oden fell backward and fired a shot at Allen, which struck Allen in the head.
