OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Parents in the Papillion-La Vista Community Schools district went before the school board Monday, calling on the district to expand bus routes after two students were struck by vehicles while walking to school in January.
Under current district policy, students living within four miles of their school do not have access to bus transportation. Some parents said that distance can amount to a walk of more than an hour along roads that include Highway 370, 72nd Street, Giles Road, and Cornhusker Road.
Military families among those affected
Several parents who spoke at the meeting identified themselves as military families, saying the lack of busing creates particular hardships for households where a parent may not be available to drive children to school.
“It’s not something that is easy to navigate for them,” said Angie Fair, a concerned military parent. “And I would hate for them to move here and then have a four mile walk for their children which is an hour and twenty minutes.”…
