Miami man sentenced in PPP loan fraud scheme

MIAMI, Florida — The final defendant in a scheme to fraudulently obtain Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans has been sentenced in federal court.

Max Alberto Mera Ulloa, a resident of Miami-Dade County, was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison followed by one year of supervised release after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. U.S. District Judge Ed Artau handed down the sentence.

“This scheme exploited emergency relief programs funded by the American taxpayer,” said U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida. “These defendants submitted more than 165 fraudulent loan applications and then demanded kickbacks from the very funds meant to keep workers employed.”…
