Amarillo City Council talks zoo lease, Ten Commandments monument, railroad crossings in Tuesday meeting

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Amarillo City Council is expected to hold a budget work session and a regular meeting on Tuesday, which is set to include discussions on items such as railroad crossing eliminations, the lease of the Amarillo Zoo, and considering the acceptance of a public display of a monument of the Ten Commandments on city property.

The budget workshop is set to be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday in the City Council Chambers, and is set to include a discussion and review of “financial conditions, service levels, capital needs, and policy priorities” ahead of the development of the fiscal year 2026-2027 city budget.

As noted by the agenda, the discussion “is intended to provide direction and general consensus on priorities to be used in the preparation of a future proposed budget; no proposed budget will be presented, considered, adopted, or voted on at this workshop, and no final decision or vote on the budget will occur.”

The Amarillo City Council will also hold an executive session starting at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, in which it will consult with an attorney on items including placing a donated Ten Commandments monument at Amarillo City Hall, and a set of property located in the northeast portion of the city.
