Blustery Wednesday as strong mid-March cold front sweeps panhandles

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — A strong cold front will sweep across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles early Wednesday morning, bringing a sharp increase in winds and cooler temperatures for mid-week.

The front is expected to move into the northwestern Panhandles between 2 and 3 a.m. Wednesday, reaching the Amarillo area between 4 and 5 a.m. The boundary should push through the southeastern Panhandle, including Childress and Paducah, between 6 and 7 a.m.

Behind the front, winds will quickly shift to the north and strengthen rapidly.

A Wind Advisory will be in effect for much of the central and eastern Texas Panhandle, including Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, Hereford, Dumas, Canyon and Clarendon, from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Future wind projections show winds increasing rapidly behind the front, where wind gusts will range from 45 to 60 mph across much of the area. Sustained winds generally will range between 20 and 30 mph, but a brief period of winds sustained as high as 40 will be possible…
