Vehicle camping on public property is now illegal in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – On Tuesday, Colorado Springs city council passed an amendment to camping laws to make it illegal to camp in a vehicle.

This prohibits camping in one spot in a vehicle for more than 24 hours, according to the language of the amendment. This expands already existing authority police have in their homeless outreach operations.

The key changes are:

  • Camping in one spot for more than 24 hours is prohibited
  • Police must first issue a verbal warning to let the camper know that vehicle camping is illegal
  • Police can issue a citation, but only after 24 hours of issuing that verbal warning.
