Corps Reopens Two Campgrounds at J. Strom Thurmond Lake

After over a year and a half of clean-up of damage left behind by Hurricane Helene, the Corps of Engineers has reopened two large campgrounds on J. Strom Thurmond Lake in Appling, GA.

Of the three reservoir lakes on the Savannah River, Thurmond Lake and the surrounding campgrounds and recreation areas were most severely damaged by the hurricane that came through in September 2024.

On Tuesday, they announced that both Winfield and Petersburg campgrounds have reopened to the public. Camping season starts March 27, and campgrounds will be open through Sept. 13, 2026…
