Detroit mother charged after her son fatally shot his sister with ‘unsecured gun’ suspect left in her car

Authorities in Detroit have brought charges against a 41-year-old mother after her son, 11, fatally shot his 6-year-old sister with an “unsecured gun” that the minor found in their mother’s car.

In a statement on Facebook, the Detroit Police Department said that the fatal March 2 shooting occurred after the suspect, identified as Tonya Charisse-Annice Johnson, left her five children “unattended” in her car and went to a restaurant.

Authorities said that officers responded to a restaurant in the 9700 block of Harper Avenue on the said date after they received a report about a shooting. The responding officers found a child who had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said. The child was ultimately transported to a local hospital by medics who responded to the scene.
