Syracuse’s zoo welcomes new animals, new director

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) — Some new animals have been welcomed to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.

Visitors to the zoo can now see a 2-year-old Amur leopard named Grover and a pair of black and rufous elephant shrews.

Along with the new animals, the zoo is also welcoming a new executive director, Dan Meates. Meates had been serving as the interim zoo director after Ted Fox announced his retirement.

The Amur leopard, an endangered species, is among the rarest big cats in the world. Numbers vary as to how many are left, though the World Wildlife Fund has estimated up to 200 are left in the wild…
