A celebrated piece of Springfield history and culture has vanished from downtown streets, which has since been a cause of uproar and community backlash.
The mural, inspired by Robert E. Smith’s artwork, on the corner of Walnut Street and Campbell Avenue for over 25 years, has recently been painted over by the building’s new owner.
The property at 400 W. Walnut St. was purchased by David Pere during October 2025 through his real estate company.
Pere, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, has since announced his plans to transform the space into a headquarters for his veteran-focused enterprise, From Military to Millionaire. His business focuses on providing financial services to fellow veterans through podcasts, blogs and his book “The No B.S. Guide to Military Life.”
