Northeast Ohio restaurant owner stops $5K fraud attempt with bank’s Positive Pay program

EUCLID, Ohio (WOIO) – A Northeast Ohio restaurant owner says a check fraud protection program through KeyBank stopped a nearly $5,000 loss after a criminal attempted to pass an altered check through one of her business accounts.

Carol Abbot owns four restaurants across Northeast Ohio, with locations at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, in Mentor, and in Willoughby Hills. She said a previous fraud incident years ago prompted her to enroll in a program called Positive Pay, which flags suspicious checks before money leaves an account.

Program put to the test

That protection was tested this past Monday, when an altered check was presented against her account.

“Another altered check was presented. I received a notice through Positive Pay, and when I reviewed it, I saw that the name on the check was different. I immediately declined the payment,” Abbot said…
