AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Several teachers and a staff member were honored at the recent Amarillo Independent School District School Board meeting on March 9 due to their heroic efforts.
According to AISD officials, Palo Duro High School teacher Raymond Leverett was honored for quickly responding to a colleague in distress in October 2025. Officials noted that Levertt was in the hallway between class periods when a substitute teacher came out of the classroom and motioned that she was choking. Levertt was able to perform the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the obstruction.

AISD also honored several Olsen Park Elementary teachers for their efforts to extinguish a grass fire near the school on Feb. 17. The teachers, Jenny Morgan, Natalie Winborne, CC Brooks, and substitute teacher Heather Chico, helped “save the day” when a grass fire erupted across the street from the school by calling 911 and alerting neighbors.
The teachers worked with other citizens to use water hoses and buckets of water to help extinguish the fire until firefighters arrived.
