Augusta commissioners to consider federal investigation call after Housing audit

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The audit of the Housing and Development Office has red flags rising.

“Can’t find all the information that’s needed, there’s problems. They can’t determine what the checks were written for, that’s another problem,” said Mayor Pro-Tem Wayne Guilfoyle.The audit found many problems with the lack of financial over-site at Housing and Development where millions of dollars in federal funds are unaccounted for.“It’s about 6.8 million actually, that they can’t confirm the auditors said on yesterday that was actually utilized the actual ERA expenses,” said City Administrator Tameka Allen. Auditors who went before commissioners were pressed on whether this was sloppy bookkeeping or something more sinister.“There were significant internal control weaknesses which equates to financial mismanagement,” said Bonnie Cox, a partner at Cherry Bekaert.But the amount of the missing federal funds has city leaders making plans for an official request to have federal authorities open an investigation.
