WMU buys property for $6M, usurping NASA-affiliated laboratory plans

KALAMAZOO, MI — Western Michigan University is purchasing the Newell Brands Design Center at 3300 Research Way for $6 million.

The property was already under contract with Faraday Defense, a technology company intending to build a laboratory in partnership with NASA. But after WMU’s decision to purchase it instead, Faraday Defense will have to find another location.

WMU’s Board of Trustees purchased the property through a right of first refusal agreement with Newell at a Tuesday, March 10 board meeting. The decision was made after the university learned Newell was planning to sell the property to Faraday Defense, according to meeting documents…
