Boston creates $4.4M immigrant assistance fund

A new $4.4 million fund established by the city of Boston and local nonprofit organizations will help immigrants access legal assistance, basic necessities and other important resources.

Boston is contributing $1.3 million to the fund, allocated in last year’s city budget, with the rest contributed by the Boston Foundation, the Barr Foundation and United Way of Massachusetts Bay. The organizations are seeking additional private donations to further expand the grant money pool.

Mayor Michelle Wu said at a press conference Tuesday that grants would be provided to organizations helping immigrants amid hostility from the federal government under President Donald Trump.
