Merrill Cook, former Utah congressman, dies at 79

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Merrill Cook, who served as a congressman in Utah’s second congressional district from 1997 to 2001, has died at 79 years old.

According to a press release from his family, Merrill Alonzo Cook died peacefully on March 9 at 79 years old. Cook was elected to represent Utah’s Second Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1997 to 2001.

In that time, he served on the House Banking Committee, the Space Science Subcommittee, and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. According to his son, he also helped secure funding for the 2001 Salt Lake City Olympics…
