Rêve Bistro is the East Bay’s Authentic French Hideaway

San Francisco might claim bragging rights when it comes to serious French cuisine in the Bay Area. So it’s slightly surprising that one of the region’s most authentic French bistro experiences requires a short drive east across the Bay Bridge and into the suburbs of Lafayette, best known for leafy neighborhoods and great public schools. Yet that is exactly what devoted diners do for a table at Rêve Bistro.

A Little Paris in the ‘Hood

Rêve occupies a modest corner spot in a location many drivers might pass without notice. Behind the doors is a kitchen devoted to the sort of classical cuisine that defines Parisian bistros. Step through the gate and twinkle lights glow above patio tables, casting a warm shimmer that has made the terrace one of Lafayette’s most beloved al fresco dining spots. Inside, the dining room channels the convivial spirit of a Parisian neighborhood bistro: checkered tablecloths beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers, black-and-white French photography lining exposed brick walls, and fresh flowers brightening every table. Owners Paul and Laura Magu describe the concept simply—“a little Paris in the ’hood.”

The restaurant recently marked its tenth anniversary, a milestone that reflects how deeply it has embedded itself within the East Bay dining community. Yet the appeal extends far beyond Lafayette. Regulars drive from Oakland, San Francisco and even Napa for a meal that feels rooted in the traditions of France.
