Make an Impact: Lansing man told he’d never walk again beats the odds with help from YMCA trainer

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -A Lansing man nearly died on the job, and doctors said he’d never walk again. But Rob Ackley is beating the odds.

Nearly three years ago, Ackley was working as a crane operator on the I-496 project in Lansing when he suffered an aortic dissection, a tear in the heart that can be fatal. A coworker called 911. Paramedics rushed him to Sparrow Hospital, and then doctors flew him to the University of Michigan for emergency surgery.

“They were scared behind the mask. They called all my family. And then they said they flew me to U of M because nobody at Sparrow or Grand Rapids ever could do this,” Ackley said…
