ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ehren Jarrett addressed families and staff this week, outlining significant budget challenges facing the district and announcing more than 100 position reductions as RPS 205 works to close a $15 million deficit.
In a video message, Jarrett said the district is confronting “a dramatic rise in health care costs” and widespread inflation, factors he said have driven up operating expenses across nearly every part of the school system. He added that students’ needs changed sharply after the pandemic, prompting the district to hire additional staff to provide support.
“As part of the budget process, the district also conducted a comprehensive review of its programs and initiatives. In total, 345 initiatives were evaluated, with 48 reduced and 27 eliminated in order to focus resources on the work that most directly supports student success,” the district said in a press release…
