Around 7 a.m., three squad cars and a white van were pulled off Desert View near the wash. They’d strung up tape by the culvert, and a couple of detectives were crouched near a patch of reeds. You could smell the stagnant water. Runners were turning back, phones out, trading guesses — none of them helpful.
