Law student who died in ‘terror’ event mulled mass shooting at Siena

ALBANY — An Albany Law School student who took his own life last month after what law enforcement officials described as a failed terrorism incident targeting a massive energy substation in southern Nevada had allegedly also considered a plan to carry out a mass shooting at Siena University.

The former student, 23-year-old Dawson N. Maloney, whose family lives in Saratoga County, graduated from Siena in 2024. He had been an honors student in the school’s undergraduate law and psychology programs, and was also on the school president’s list honoring students with high grade point averages. More recently, he was in his second year at Albany Law School and had been scheduled to graduate next year.

The FBI’s ongoing investigation of the Feb. 19 incident in Nevada has been led by the Albany field office, whose agents obtained search warrants last month that they used to retrieve electronics and gun components from two residences tied to Maloney in the Albany area…
