The UC Irvine Police Department is investigating a possible hate crime involving a group of teens on electric bikes who allegedly harassed and injured a student.
The Feb. 27 attack took place at the student housing community Arroyo Vista when “multiple juveniles” on e-bikes used racial slurs and spat on a student, according to a crime alert sent to UC Irvine students. The minors, who were white and around ages 14 to 17, also allegedly struck the student’s leg with an e-bike tire.
The teens fled the scene once police arrived, but one juvenile was later detained in a campus parking structure, according to an incident report shared with SFGATE by the university.
