ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — At a time when families across the Rochester region are stretching every dollar, Congressman Joe Morelle delivered a blunt warning Thursday: the need for food assistance is rising fast, and Washington’s new rules may only make things harder.
Morelle, speaking before dozens of food pantry leaders at Foodlink’s annual agency conference, didn’t hold back. He praised volunteers as “hope in action” but condemned recent federal moves he says punish the working poor while protecting the wealthy.
“We gave a $5 trillion tax cut to the wealthiest Americans and didn’t ask them for a single thing in return,” Morelle said. “But we’re asking people who are struggling, most of whom are working, to fill out more paperwork just to get a little help with groceries. It’s disgraceful. It’s immoral.”…
