First Alert: Severe Storms Sunday PM

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – Severe storms are once again in the forecast heading into the weekend. While a majority of the weekend is shaping up nicely, severe storms are possible Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening.

All hazards are possible, but damaging winds appear to be the primary threat across the area. Most of Region 8 is under a LOW (Level 2 of 5) risk for severe weather, but a portion is under a MEDIUM (Level 3 of 5) risk.

What we Know:

A strong upper-level dip in the jet stream will promote a strong lower-level response with 20-30 MPH southerly winds pulling in moisture from the Gulf. This surge in moisture will collide with a strong cold front approaching from the northwest. With the ingredients for storms in place, a line or broken line of storms will form in Western Arkansas before surging east through the afternoon and evening. Behind the cold front, strong northwesterly winds will usher in much colder air to start next week.

Timing:

Most of Sunday morning and afternoon will be dry with clouds across the area. The line of storms will fire across Western and Central portions of the Arkansas after 12 p.m. before pushing through the area and exiting by 10 p.m. Storm chances will really increase around the dinner hour on Sunday for areas along the Ridge.
