Morgan Freeman movie inspires program to keep Rockford students from skipping school

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Jeremy Coleman left an institute day at Rockford’s Auburn High School dismayed yet inspired. The behavior specialist learned his alma mater, now occupation, fell behind state averages for various student metrics.

Starting with chronic absenteeism, the 2025 Illinois Report Card shows more than half of Auburn’s students miss 10% of school days — higher than Rockford Public Schools and the state average. That statistic worsens with Black students, where absenteeism jumps to 70%.
