Shopify CEO Uses AI to Create Custom MRI Viewer: A Glimpse into the Future of “Reflexive AI”

Sun Valley, ID – In a fascinating display of practical AI application, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke recently revealed how he leveraged artificial intelligence to solve a surprisingly niche, yet personally significant, problem: viewing his annual MRI scans.

Lütke, a prominent figure in the tech world, shared that his MRI results arrive on a USB stick, traditionally requiring specialized commercial Windows software to open. However, instead of seeking out this existing software, he took a different approach. He opted to run Anthropic’s Claude AI model directly on the raw MRI files, prompting it to construct a custom, web-based viewer.

The outcome, according to Lütke, was not just functional but “way better” than conventional options. Taking it a step further, with just one additional prompt, the AI-generated tool even annotated the images with the findings from the scan, streamlining the interpretation process.

Lütke coined this innovative approach “reflexively” reaching for AI – encouraging individuals to instinctively turn to AI to build tailored solutions when readily available software falls short. He emphasized the importance of cultivating this intuition, stating in a widely viewed thread on X, “You want to train your brain on this intuition.”

This kind of exploratory problem-solving, while initially demanding more time and a willingness to challenge established norms, is crucial for unlocking AI’s full potential, explains Bernard Golden, CEO of Navica, a Silicon Valley-based technology analysis firm. “You have to spend some brainpower to reflect on established habits to see how AI could be inserted,” Golden told Business Insider. He added that this experimentation creates a “snowball effect,” where increased attempts lead to greater proficiency and confidence, much like learning a new language.
