Bill asserting state control of GRU heads to governor’s desk

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) — The Florida Senate voted 30-6 Friday to approve a utilities bill that includes an amendment asserting state control of Gainesville Regional Utilities.

The bill has been amended several times before reaching its final form. One of those amendments directly addresses state authority over GRU.

State lawmakers had previously granted Gov. Ron DeSantis the authority to appoint a board to oversee GRU. Gainesville city leaders then held two votes to regain control of the utility, both of which were overwhelmingly approved by city voters…
