Weak powers, limited cooperation hamper Mission Hospital oversight, independent monitor says

Since 2024, Affiliated Monitors has been tasked with overseeing whether HCA Healthcare is complying with the asset purchase agreement it made when it bought Mission Hospital. But limited enforcement powers, the agreement’s vagueness and a struggle to obtain records have been roadblocks in the independent monitor’s mission.

These issues were laid bare earlier this week during two community meetings in Transylvania and Buncombe counties. The meetings were hosted by Dogwood Health Trust, the nonprofit created from the proceeds of the $1.5 billion sale of Mission. Dogwood is responsible for ensuring HCA adheres to the asset purchase agreement, or APA, and hired Affiliated to oversee compliance…
