Furloughs hit more than 50 NOPD civilian employees as officer ranks remain near historic low

More than 50 civilian employees at the New Orleans Police Department will be furloughed for weeks this year as the city grapples with a $222 million budget deficit incurred by the previous administration.

Furloughed employees must take one day off per pay period under a sliding scale that requires between zero and 22 furlough days. The administration set the scale based on salary, according to Amy Trepagnier, personnel director for the Civil Service Department.

Forty-nine NOPD staffers will take the maximum 22 furlough days in 2026, according to documents obtained by The Times-Picayune through a public records request.
