‘Link Up’ program enriches Eugene youth with music

EUGENE, Ore. – The Hult Center buzzed with excitement as 2,000 students gathered for a special Youth Symphony concert.

The event, called “Link Up,” is a youth program in partnership with Carnegie Hall in New York. Musicians visit classrooms beforehand to teach students how to sing and play along on their recorders. Students from Eugene, Springfield, and as far as Bandon participated, many experiencing their first live concert.

“I’ve been doing this now with the symphony for almost two decades, I think, and it’s just really really fun,” said Bill Hulings, a theater professional. “The energy that the kids bring into the hall is tremendous. It’s really important that we get our youth coming to the arts and so it becomes a natural part of their life.”…
