Gunshots Ring Out, Then Southwest Atlanta Apartment Erupts In Flames

Early Saturday morning, a two-story building at 2905 Springdale Road SW in southwest Atlanta was heavily damaged by fire after tenants reported vandalism and gunshots overnight. Fire crews rolled up just before dawn and attacked the flames as neighbors watched from the street. The complex’s owner says the burned unit was vacant and that she suspects squatters may have been involved while investigators work to pin down what started the blaze.

According to Atlanta News First, firefighters were called to the property at around 5 a.m. The outlet quoted owner Medina Jett, who said she bought the buildings a little over a month ago, describing the scene as “one of the buildings is literally burning to the ground.”

Tenant Reports Of Breaking Windows And Shots

Jett said a tenant phoned her in the middle of the night to report someone breaking windows and firing shots into the air, and she believes squatters could be responsible. It is not yet known whether anyone was hurt in the fire, and officials have not announced a cause.

Violence And Neglect Have Plagued The Corridor

The Springdale Road block has seen violence before. A deadly shooting at a nearby Bolden Village complex on the 2900 block was reported by FOX 5 Atlanta in May 2025. Local outlets have tracked repeated police responses to nearby complexes, including coverage of shots ring out again at troubled Country Oaks Apartments, and broader investigations have shown how poorly maintained rental properties can become magnets for crime and hazards in Atlanta.

Investigation Underway

Atlanta News First reports it has asked the Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department for more details, and fire officials told reporters they are still working to determine the official cause. In the near term, city inspectors and the property owner will likely coordinate on safety measures for surviving units and any displaced residents…
