PLEASANT HILL, Iowa — The NuCara Specialty Pharmacy in Pleasant Hill and its parent company NuDak Ventures, LLC, are being sued by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, after $22 million in a federal program for HIV medication allegedly went unpaid.
According to court documents, NuCara ordered medications on behalf of Iowa HHS and the department paid discounted rates for eligible clients while NuCara billed insurers standard prices. NuCara was allowed to keep $75 for each processed claim, but generated income was supposed to go back to HHS for reinvestment in the HIV medication program.
The suit by HHS specifically looks at contracts for fiscal year 2025 and 2026, in which it says NuCara was responsible for paying the generated income each month…
