‘Castle Wyrd rises’: Portland’s medieval-themed tavern is building a mythic new Milwaukie meadery

A typical night at Southeast Portland’s medieval fantasy-themed tavern sees pirates, elves and knights — plus the occasional post-comic con Hellboy — all mingling under one roof.

Wyrd Leatherworks & Meadery opened along Southeast Holgate Boulevard in fall 2020, turning what was once a tiny Milwaukie retail shop into a full-fledged medieval hangout fit for a pack of Dungeons & Dragons-playing Vikings.

Located in the basement of what was once the colonial-themed Ye Olde Towne Crier restaurant, the tavern has amassed an overflow of costumed patrons over the years.

“We created such a big, vast network of people — of supporters, fans, friends, artists, musicians — and gave people a place that they could call home,” said owner Travis Sigler, who first launched Wyrd in 2017. “We just kind of outgrew the space.”…
