School safety system uses lights to guide people out of emergencies

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Following Thursday’s deadly shooting at Old Dominion University, a new technology company called Go To Green is working to improve safety during emergencies at schools with a new type of light alert system.

CEO Ernie Williams, a former U.S. Marine, said the mission is to protect potential victims. He said within a second after an attack, blinking green lights turn on to lead people away from the threat, and steady red lights lead police and other responders toward it.

“When there’s a shooting or an incident going on, everybody focuses on a shooter, and we kind of forget about the innocence that are stuck around him,” Williams said. “Within a second, we light pathways to get people away from the gunshot.”…
